Medical Marijuana Q & A

What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is the use of marijuana to treat medical conditions and their symptoms. Marijuana contains over 100 cannabinoid chemicals. Each of these chemicals has a different effect on the body, interacting with the body’s own endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a cell-signaling system that regulates many body functions, such as:

  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Sleep
  • Memory
  • Pain
  • Inflammation

The cannabinoids in medical marijuana interact with your ECS, binding with receptors or protecting your body’s own endocannabinoids, improving their effectiveness.

Though there are more than 100 cannabinoids in medical marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have undergone the most research.

THC interacts directly with the ECS and is the chemical in marijuana that produces the “high.” Researchers are still investigating how CBD works, but they theorize it may improve the function of your body’s own ECS. CBD doesn’t produce the high.

What are the qualifying conditions for medical marijuana?

In Virginia, health care professionals determine whether you qualify for medical marijuana if you have a diagnosis or symptom that would improve with medical marijuana.

Some of the common conditions that benefit from medical marijuana include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Anxiety
  • Autism
  • Cachexia and wasting syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Tourette’s syndrome

If you have any of these conditions or symptoms that aren’t responding to traditional medical care, schedule a medical marijuana consultation at Health and Wellness Medical Services.

What happens during a medical marijuana consultation?

The Health and Wellness Medical Services team conducts a thorough examination during a medical marijuana consultation. The team wants to fully understand your medical concerns so they can determine if you would benefit from medical marijuana.

They review your symptoms, medical history, and family history. They may also request you send copies of your medical records so they can fully understand your diagnosis and medical needs.

If you have a qualifying condition or symptom that would benefit from medical marijuana, your provider at Health and Wellness Medical Services gives you a medical marijuana certification so you can get your medical marijuana card.

Once you have your medical marijuana card, you can go to one of the area dispensaries to buy your medical marijuana.
