The Importance of Social Distancing

The Importance of Social Distancing

What is it?

Social distancing means putting space between yourself and other people. The recommended distance is 6 feet, or about 2 meters. This also means staying away from any place where people publically gather, such as parks.

Why is it important?

This coronavirus seems to spread from person to person contact via droplets from coughing and sneezing. Therefore, if you stay separate from others the virus will spread less. Social distancing is important for everyone, not just those who are at high risk of infection, like older people. You might have the virus, but not have symptoms. You could then give the infection to someone you come into contact with.

How do I social distance?

Through our interconnected and socially driven world, it is not easy or natural to socially distance. Regardless, here are a few tips that can help your loved ones and community to lessen the spread:

  • Work from home.
  • Don’t travel if you don’t have to. And avoid public transportation, ride-shares, and taxis unless you have no choice.
  • Limit shopping to essentials, like food and medicines. If shopping is essential, try to make use of no-contact, curbside pickup if it is available.
  • Wear a cloth face cover if you have to go to a public place like the grocery store or pharmacy.
  • Strongly limit eating in restaurants, and eat outside if you can. (You can still get takeout or food deliveries.)
  • Avoid crowds and busy places. Follow stay-at-home orders or other directions for your area.

What are some socially distanced family activities?

  • Go for a walk or a hike (wear your cloth mask when you pass those not in your group).
  • Have a picnic distanced from others.
  • Hang a sheet and watch an outdoor movie.
